Jareducation

What’s really sad is it never got weird enough for me. . . Lazlo and Nixon are both gone now, but I don’t think I’m going to believe that ’til I can gnaw on their skulls with my very own teeth. . . If they’re out there, I’m going to find them, and I’m going to gnaw on their skulls. Because it still hasn’t gotten weird enough for me. - Hunter S. Thompson

Labor story

Posted on | December 12, 2008 | No Comments

Had to scramble a little more on this one. I knew nothing about the SEIU when I was assigned to report on it. So, I was a little lost listening to the press conference I was covering. The labor reporter was not in and the anchor who is very familiar with the SEIU was not there either to help me out. It took me a while to figure out what they were even voting on. I started playing with the audio techniques Rose showed me the other day. Read more

Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta dying

Posted on | December 3, 2008 | No Comments

The state of California, by way of bureaucratic policy, is killing the Delta that feeds the San Francisco Bay. Northern California supplies much of the Central Valley and southern CA with water for all kinds of agricultural projects. I found out today that the current practices divert massive amounts of water to cotton fields, cow pastures and alfalfa. Much of this is exported.

The best single line on terrorism

Posted on | December 3, 2008 | No Comments

Yifat Susskind argues that India should not respond to the Mumbai attacks like the U.S. did to 9/11, but it is likely to. In his article today on Common Dreams, Susskind writes the single best line I have yet to read or hear about terrorism.

Terrorist attacks are not acts of war to be responded to in kind, but crimes against humanity.

Forget the “contextualist” part

Posted on | December 2, 2008 | 2 Comments

My use of the phrase “Failure of American Democracy” was too narrow-minded. I am listening to Robert Gates talk about staying on to the Obama team. My thinking rested on the simple idea that Obama’s pick do not reflect the will of the electorate. People voted for change and are getting a recycled version of the Reagan-Bush-Clinton years. One commentator said the picture of his team could be a pic of 1995, with Obama photoshopped into the picture. Read more

Playing w/ the Aperture Setting

Posted on | November 24, 2008 | 1 Comment

I figured out how to turn up the aperture setting on my camera and began shooting in RAW format. This allows me much more control in the editing process. I met this couple after I took their picture. Their names escape me now. (Couple, when you find my site, you can put your names in a comment for me)

I was trying to get up to the top of the hill looking over my shoulder at the sunset. The whole sky was purple. Whispy purple tails hung off of the clouds and the sky shown pink. I caught the last gasp of light in Alta Plaza.
